Leadership is far more than the position you hold; leadership means the way that you conduct yourself, the behaviours you demonstrate, and how you make others feel in the workplace.
There are a great many highly qualified, intelligent people who have reached the peak of expertise in their field, who have status, influence and respect based on their knowledge in that role. However, when those experts move into leadership roles, that influence and respect doesn’t always transition with them – and the behaviours required of a leader are significantly different to those required of an expert.
Without the right development and support even the most respected expert can stumble during the transition – expertise and knowledge are fantastic tools for developing trust, but that is no guarantee of success.
Successful leadership is as much about relationships as it is knowledge, and a newly promoted expert must understand that they must earn as much respect from what they say and do as from what they know. Knowing more than those you work with isn’t helpful in guiding their performance – a great leader needs to provide vision, strategy, emotional intelligence and an ability to relate to their workforce, and engage them, inform them and inspire them.
To support a successful transition through this process, our Expert to Leader programme provides a phased approach which supports behavioural change and ensures that this development is sustained.
Personal, real and relevant
- Personal: psychometrics and diagnostic tools are used to develop self-awareness
- Real: explicitly setting the learning in the context of the organisation and its business agenda
- Relevant: inviting participants to work on real Business Challenges that enable them to ‘hit the floor running’ when they return to work
We utilise our Engage, Learn, Transfer and Evaluate approach, which maximises the application of learning to the workplace by driving learner engagement and critical Line Manager involvement, providing follow-through with coaching and support.
We also ongoing support with our Personal Development Mentoring service after our training events, which further ensures the embedding of successful learning and development into the workplace day to day.
